Using second-skin adhesive bandages:
Your bandage can remain on between 1 to 4 days. If fluid leaks out of the bandage, it is compromised and should be removed. If you notice redness or swelling around the edges of the bandage, remove the bandage. When wearing second-skin bandages, you may shower, but try to avoid getting the bandage excessively wet or soapy. When removing the second-skin bandage, get the edges wet with warm water and soap. Begin rolling the bandage off the skin, and ensure soap and water are making contact between the film and the skin. Continue to pull bandage down and away from skin until it is completely removed. Wash the tattoo thoroughly with soap and water and pat dry with a clean towel. Moisturize your tattoo daily with clean hands using either an unscented lotion or ointment.
Using traditional bandage:
Your bandage should remain on overnight if possible. After removing your bandage, wash your tattoo thoroughly with soap and water. Pat dry with a clean towel. Moisturize your tattoo daily with clean hands using either an unscented lotion or ointment. If using an ointment, it is recommended that you apply the product sparingly, as overuse/over-saturation can lead to complications in healing. Wear clean, loose clothing. Moisturizer can be used liberally several times a day. Do not re-bandage your tattoo. Continue to moisturize your tattoo until it is fully healed - approximately 2-3 weeks. Do not pick or scratch your tattoo.
Using the second-skin sleep method for those with adhesive allergies:
This method is best used for individuals who have received a large tattoo or lengthy tattoo session.* Your bandage should remain on overnight if possible. After removing your bandage, wash your tattoo thoroughly with soap and water. Pat dry with a clean towel. Moisturize your tattoo daily with clean hands using either an unscented lotion or ointment. For the first 3-4 nights, wash your tattoo before bed and pat dry. Do not apply any product to the tattoo after washing it. Wrap the tattoo snug with Saran Wrap and secure the edges with tape or sports wrap, ensuring adhesive is not making contact with the skin. Keeping the tattoo wrapped at night ensures that the tattoo does not dry out and is kept moist with the body’s own fluid production. During the day, you may moisturize your tattoo and wear clean, loose clothing.
